At its 1945 National Conference, AHEPA resolved to build a hospital in Greece.

The country was coming out of occupation and civil conflict with its medical system in ruins, and the order decided that the response would be a permanent institution rather than temporary relief. The fundraising drive opened in Atlanta in January 1946 and collected more than $170,000 in its first three weeks, with the Greek War Relief Association matching contributions dollar for dollar. Chapters across the United States carried the campaign, turning a national resolution into money on the ground in a matter of months.

AHEPA University Hospital in Thessaloniki was dedicated on May 14, 1951, with the King and Queen of Greece present. Today it holds 680 beds, serves as a primary teaching hospital for Aristotle University, and has treated more than 10 million patients. Generations of Greek physicians have trained in its wards, and generations of families have been cared for there. Seven decades later, it remains one of the clearest examples of what organized Hellenism can accomplish.
